WHAT IS AURONAL AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR 
Auronal is used to treat mild to moderate hypertension and angina to prevent crises. Auronal is part of the group of calcium channel blockers with mainly vascular effects.

HOW TO USE AURONAL
Auronal should be always taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. Auronal extended-release tablet should be taken once a day, preferably morning. The drug lasts 24 hours. We recommend swallowing the tablet with water, the tablet should not be chewed or crushed. Extended-release tablet can be taken on an empty stomach or after a light meal. If you have hypertension, the dose should be adjusted individually according to the response to treatment. Treatment is initiated with a dose of 5 mg once a day and usually continue with 5-10 mg per day. In some cases your doctor may increase to a maximum daily dose 20 mg. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS 
Like all medicines, Auronal can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most adverse reactions are due to dilation of small arteries and that is a sign that Auronal has the effect of lowering blood pressure. They may occur early in treatment, in the first week or in connection with an increase in dose and usually disappear on their own. Common (affects more than 1 person in 100): headache, flushing associated with a feeling of warmth, swelling of the ankles. Uncommon: fatigue, dizziness, nausea, increased heart rate, palpitations, stomach pain, redness with / without itching, sensation of “needles” (tingling) in the skin. Rare (in more than one person in 1000): vomiting, hives, impotence, fainting due to too low blood pressure associated with increased heart rate, which in susceptible individuals with angina heart can cause heart pain. If this occurs, contact your doctor immediately. The active ingredient in Auronal is felodipine, a calcium channel blocker that widens the blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. This oral medication comes in tablet form in doses of 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg.

How to Take Auronal

When taken for high blood pressure, the usual adult dosage is 5 mg taken in the morning. However, doses may start as low as 2.5 mg and can increase up to 10 mg daily. If the drug is taken to treat angina, the usual dosage is 5 mg taken in the morning. This may increase to 10 mg daily. Take Auronal with food or drink as directed by your doctor. Do not drink grapefruit juice when taking this medication. Grapefruit juice may reduce the effectiveness of calcium antagonists such as Auronal. Do not crush or chew the tablets. The drug lasts for 24 hours and should be taken at the same time every day.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, flushed feeling and swelling of the ankles. Uncommon side effects include weakness, dizziness, palpitations, heartburn, nausea, constipation, skin rash, dry mouth, upset stomach, joint pain, increased heart rate and a feeling of warmth. Talk to your doctor if you notice these symptoms. Rare but serious side effects include swelling of the lips, tongue or throat followed by difficulty swallowing or breathing. Fainting may occur. These symptoms require urgent medical attention.

Precautions

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Auronal. The drug is expressed in breast milk. It is not intended for use in children. Patients with heart disease or hypertension should discuss these conditions with their doctors before taking this medication. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to felodipine or other dihydropyridine medications. Talk to your doctor before taking Auronal if you have impaired liver function.

Avoid operating heavy machinery when taking this drug. Felodipine, the active ingredient, may cause delayed reaction time, dizziness and fatigue, particularly when first starting treatment or adjusting dosages.

Interactions

The following drugs may interact with Auronal: cimetidine, erythromycin, barbiturates, phenytoin, and carbamazepine. If you take any of these medications, tell your doctor. You may need a reduced or increased dose of Auronal. Tell your doctor if you are currently taking or have recently taken seizure medications, antibiotics, fungal medications, protease inhibitors, drugs that suppress the immune system, ulcer medications or St. John’s Wort.

Missed Dose or Overdose

If you forget to take a dose, wait until your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not double up on doses. If you suspect an overdose, call your local poison control center or your nearest emergency room.
