Asentra is a prescription medication that treats both anxiety disorders and depression. It can also be used to treat those suffering from PTSD, but it is not supposed to be taken by anyone under the age of 18 years old unless they suffer from OCD and even then, patients under the age of six should not take Asentra.

There are certain reported side effects of using Asentra that make or may not show up in a patient taking it. The side effect most commonly seen in those who take Asentra is nausea. More severe side effects of taking this medication can include a skin rash that leads to blistering. This must immediately be reported to a doctor because this is one possible sign of a serious condition known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome. In some patients an allergic reaction to Asentra is possible. A rash and swollen faces and eyelids are possible side effects for someone who is allergic to this medication. Patients that experience yellow skin and eyes as a result of taking Asentra may have damage to their liver.

Serotonin Syndrome is another possible condition that could be caught in a patient taking Asentra. Symptoms of this condition include increased blood pressure and/or body temperature, confusion and agitation, diarrhea, fast heartbeat and more sweating than normal.

Anyone taking Asentra should avoid stopping the medication suddenly. Consequences of doing so include vomiting, anxiety, shivering, disturbance in sleep, numbness, dizziness and headache.

Women who are pregnant may not be able to take this medication. Setraline is the main ingredient in Asentra and it has yet to be established whether it has a positive, neutral or negative effect on a pregnancy. Since sertraline can appear in breast milk new mothers who are nursing their infants should avoid taking this medication. In addition, patients taking Asentra must be careful about operating a car or other vehicle.

In the United States Asentra is most commonly known as Zolaft and was introduced in the early 1990s. Aside from the conditions it is prescribed to treat, further studies are being done to determine if it can help patients suffering from vascular headaches or premature ejaculation. Previous studies have determined that Asentra is not the strongest medication used to treat depression and anxiety unless that depression or anxiety is severe. Social anxiety disorders are now often treated with Asentra, though it must be given in large doses in order to be as effective as it possibly can be. This medication is also used to treat the symptoms of PMS. With so many different uses many people are finding that taking Asentra is preferable to taking other types of medication for a number of various medical conditions.
