What is azithromycin?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria.
Azithromycin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Azithromycin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important information
You should not use this medication if you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking azithromycin.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use azithromycin if you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking this medicine. You should not use azithromycin if you are allergic to it or to similar drugs such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin.
To make sure azithromycin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- liver disease;
- kidney disease;
- myasthenia gravis;
- a heart rhythm disorder; or
- a history of Long QT syndrome.
FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether azithromycin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 6 months old.
Older adults may be more likely to have side effects on heart rhythm, including a life-threatening fast heart rate.
Azitrox (R)
Azitrox is a medication that is used to take care of infections caused by bacteria such as infections of the reproductive organs, ears, sinuses, throat and lungs. It is also used in treating and preventing an infection called MAC, or Mycobacterium avium complex. This is a type of infection that affects folks that are infected with HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus. Azitrox is in a category of medication known as macrolide antibiotics that work by stopping the bacteria growth. This medication will not work on viral infections like the cold or flu.
Azitrox comes in several forms such as tablets, long action liquid and regular liquid form. With the tablets, they are taken for anywhere from 1-5 days and may be taken with or without food. When it is being used for treating MAC infection, the tablets are taken just one time a week, again with or without food. For the extended release liquid, it is prescribed to take on an empty stomach as just a one time use dosage.
The liquid forms need to be well shaken before each dosage so that it mixed evenly. In order to be sure you are taking the exact dosage, you should used an oral syringe, dosing spoon or medication cup.
It is important that you notify your doctor right away if you experience vomiting after taking Azitrox. You should tell your doctor if you do not begin to feel better within a few days of starting treatment or if your symptoms become worse. Besides bacterial infections, Azitrox is also used in treating H. pylori infection, Legionnaries disease, traveler’s diarrhea, pertussis and babesiosis. In addition, this medication is also given to sexual assault victims to prevent sexually transmitted disease.
You may experience some side effects with Azitrox. If your symptoms do not go away, become worse or are severe in nature, you will need to let your doctor know immediately. For the more serious side effects, you will need to stop taking the medication, call your physician or seek emergency medical help right away. The more common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. The more severe symptoms include pounding heart beat, irregular heart beat, dizziness, rash, fainting, itching, hives, mouth sores, wheezing, troubles breathing, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, swelling of the face, hands, ankles or lower legs, urine that is dark in color, skin blisters, muscle weakness, troubles with muscle control, extreme fatigue, lack of energy, symptoms that resemble the flu, unusual bleeding or unusual bruising.
