What is Augmentin?

Augmentin is a penicillin antibiotic.

Augmentin contains a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called penicillins. Amoxicillin fights bacteria in the body.

Clavulanate potassium is a form of clavulanic acid, which is similar to penicillin. Clavulanate potassium fights bacteria that is often resistant to penicillins and other antibiotics.

Augmentin is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin.

Augmentin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important information

Do not use Augmentin if you are allergic to amoxicillin or clavulanate potassium, or if you have ever had liver problems caused by this medication. Do not use if you are allergic to any other penicillin antibiotic, such as amoxicillin (Amoxil, Augmentin, Dispermox, Moxatag), ampicillin (Principen, Unasyn), dicloxacillin (Dycill, Dynapen), oxacillin (Bactocill), or penicillin (Bicillin L-A, PC Pen VK, Pfizerpen), and others.

Before taking Augmentin, tell your doctor if you have liver disease (or a history of hepatitis or jaundice), kidney disease, or mononucleosis, or if you are allergic to a cephalosporin antibiotic, such as cefdinir (Omnicef), cefprozil (Cefzil), cefuroxime (Ceftin), cephalexin (Keflex), and others.

If you switch from one tablet form to another (regular, chewable, or extended-release tablet), take only the new tablet form and strength prescribed for you. This medicine may not be as effective or could be harmful if you do not use the exact tablet form your doctor has prescribed.

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Augmentin can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormone method of birth control (such as a condom, diaphragm, spermicide) to prevent pregnancy while taking Augmentin.

Augmentin

Augmentin is a combination oral antibiotic available in liquid, pill or chewable tablet forms. It is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. It is used to treat bacterial infections, especially those caused by bacteria that are resistant to amoxicillin alone. This medication does not work on viral infections such as the common cold or flu, and overusing it can make it less effective. Augmentin also goes by other trade names, including Tyclav, Clavamox, and others.

How to Take Augmentin

Patients should take the medication orally with a meal or snack as directed by the physician. Depending on whether the medication is in pill, tablet or suspension form, it is taken every 8 or 12 hours. The dosage varies according to the medical condition. It should be taken at the same times each day for maximum effectiveness. Finish the medication even if symptoms disappear within a few days. If the medication is not finished, it may result in continued growth of bacteria and reinfection.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If these symptoms are persistent or get worse, contact your doctor. Taking the medication with food reduces symptoms of upset stomach.

Rare but serious side effects of Augmentin include severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, persistent sore throat, extreme fatigue, numbness, pain, muscle weakness, tingling easy bruising, bleeding, dark urine and persistent nausea or vomiting. Rarely, the medication causes Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, a severe intestinal condition associated with resistant bacteria. Notify your doctor if you have watery or bloody diarrhea. Oral thrush or yeast infections may result with prolonged or repeated use.

Symptoms of severe allergic reaction include rash, itching, dizziness, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

Precautions

People who are allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics should not take this medication. Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease or viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis (mono). You should not receive viral vaccines while on this medication. Women who are pregnant or nursing should tell their doctors before taking Augmentin.

Interactions

Methotrexate may interact with Augmentin. Tell your doctor if you’re taking probenecid, which can cause high levels of this medication to build up in your bloodstream. Augmentin may decrease the effectiveness of birth control, resulting in pregnancy. Ask your doctor if you should use secondary birth control methods while using this medication.

Missed Dose and Overdose

If you miss a dose of Augmentin, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the next dose, skip the current dose instead. Do not double up the dosage. If you think you’ve overdosed, call the poison control center or your nearest emergency room.
